After losing our parents, my siblings and I grew even closer, leaning on each other for strength and support. My brother, Raynardo Pender, was a kind motivational speaker, remembered by his peers as generous and easy to talk to. My sister, Dr. Janell Green Smith, was a phenomenal midwife who dedicated her career to making childbirth safer for women of color. Their compassion and commitment touched so many lives, and their absence leaves a tremendous void in my heart and in our community.

Now, I am without both of them, the only person left of my immediate family, with very little to remember them by. The pain of losing two siblings in such a short time is unimaginable, especially as I welcome my niece into the world without my sister by my side. The emotional and financial challenges have been overwhelming, and I am reaching out for help to cover bills while I am out of work and to create a meaningful memorial for both of my siblings.
