My name is Ixchel Cuellar, daughter of Jose B. Cuellar (aka Dr Loco). My mom and I are raising funds to honor and carry forward the extraordinary legacy of his life’s work and spirit. My father was a remarkable cultural and academic figure in California and throughout Aztlan. Whether as a borderland native from San Antonio Texas, a husband, father, friend, compadre, Chicano, anthropologist, treasured educator, and unforgettable musician all the many paths he walked uniquely and vibrantly celebrated his indigeneity and community.
To many, he was Dr. Loco of Dr. Loco’s Rockin’ Jalapeño Band, a joyful, larger-than-life performer whose music celebrated the Chicano experience - its resounding history, humor, and love. To his students, he was a brilliant and passionate teacher who brought history to life and empowered generations to understand who they are and where they come from. To his community, he was a fierce advocate, a connector, a storyteller, and a keeper of cultural memory.
He was a dedicated activist, deeply committed to social justice, equity, and the preservation of cultural history. He was also the heart and rhythm of his family - caring, loving, silly, and endlessly inspiring.
Dr. Loco dedicated his life to uplifting Chicano and border culture through scholarship, music, and community engagement. His work bridged academia and art, tradition and innovation, rigor and joy. He believed that culture should be celebrated loudly, shared generously, and passed on with intention.
This Memorial and Legacy Fund has been created to:
– Support a memorial and celebration of life that reflects the joy, music, and community Dr. Loco embodied
– Preserve and uplift his cultural, musical, and academic legacy through the Dr Loco Legacy Project
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure that Dr. Loco’s impact continues to inspire, educate, and bring people together for generations to come.
If you knew José, you knew his laughter, his warmth, his brilliance, and his love for his community. If you didn’t, this is an invitation to be part of a legacy rooted in culture, joy, and community. Thank you for helping us honor a community icon, a teacher, a father, and one of the most loving souls to ever grace a stage or classroom.
With gratitude and love,
Ixchel Cuellar
