Homenagem aos Ancestrais do Vale da Gafaria, Lagos, Algarve
Lagos, 27 de Julho de 2026
(English version below)
- deslocações;
- produção artística e cultural;
- documentação audiovisual;
- materiais para as cerimónias;
- comunicação e logística do evento.

Tribute to the Ancestors of Vale da Gafaria, Lagos, Algarve
Lagos, 27 July 2026
On 27 July 2026, the Tribute to the Ancestors PT Collective, at the invitation of Empreitada – Cultural Association of the Algarve, will hold a gathering in Lagos to honour the African victims of the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people whose remains were found in Lagos.
This event will take place near Vale da Gafaria. Vale da Gafaria is considered the oldest and largest known site in European territory associated with the disposal of enslaved people, directly linked to the beginnings of the transatlantic slave system.
In 2009, the remains of 158 African men, women and children from the 15th century were discovered at this site — enslaved people who had been discarded in a refuse pit, many showing signs of violence.
Today, despite the historical and human significance of this place, there is still no dignified memorial to remember and honour these lives.
The Tribute to the Ancestors PT Collective was created in Lisbon in 2017, with the aim of honouring the enslaved African ancestors who lost their lives during the transatlantic slave trade in Portugal. Since then, the collective has organised memorial ceremonies, cultural gatherings, performances, music events and community actions dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims of Atlantic enslavement and celebrating African ancestry.
The collective’s work is not limited to the Ancestors of Lagos, but extends to the memory of all enslaved African people who passed through Portugal and whose stories remain largely silenced. All of this work has been carried out independently, without institutional funding or support.
The 2026 gathering aims to bring together community members, artists, researchers, musicians and national and international participants for a day of remembrance, dignity, reflection and symbolic reparation.
We are raising funds to help cover:
-travel expenses;
-artistic and cultural production;
-audiovisual documentation;
-materials for the ceremonies;
-communication and event logistics.
More than an event, this tribute is a collective act of humanity.
At a time when the memory of the victims of enslavement continues to be often overlooked in Portugal, we believe that remembering and honouring them is also a form of justice.
Every contribution makes a difference.
If you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign is already a great help.
