I had been carrying to much amniotic fluid during my pregnancy and my doctor sent me for a genetic screening ultrasound to make sure my baby was okay. Nothing could prepare us for what we were about to be told. At 34 weeks pregnant (December 23,2019) and truly believing my baby would be fine, we found out our baby has a cervical teratoma (a large mass/tumor crushing his airway, making it impossible to breath on his own) it's a very rare disorder.
The genetic doctor at the Royal Alex started putting a plan in place for his best chances at survival. I would have to have an exit procedure by 37 weeks pregnant. This procedure would allow the doctors to deliver him halfway, from his shoulders and head out while keeping him attached to the placenta while they secured his breathing either through a breathing tube or treachery.
The genetic doctor was assembling the surgical teams, for both his and my procedure but things have not gone as planned. We we're supposed to meet with the surgical Thursday, January 2 and come up with a solid plan that will allow Holden to have his best chance.
However, on the morning of December 29, I started losing fluid, lots of it. We rushed to the Royal Alex, I started to bleed out. There was no time for the surgical teams needed to be there and there was no time for the exit procedure. The placenta was detaching and an emergency c-section had to happen. By some miracle they were able to do the whole surgery in 20 minutes and secure his breathing and shortly after Holden was transported to the NICU at the Stollery. He is under constant monitoring of a nurse and has specialist check on him constantly.
We still have a lot of work to do. My heart is breaking watching/knowing what he is going through. They are currently trying to stabilize his blood pressure so he can get MRI to assess the cervical teratoma and plan surgery. We are asking for donations to help keep us close to our baby during this time. Everything happened so fast we had no time to prepare for what's happening to Holden. Even after we get Holden home, recovery will be a long process requiring constant supervision for a minimum of two years. I will not be able to return to work through recovery. Holden will have many appointments and treatments. Any help would and is appreciated.
