Help My Mum Kick Cancer

This is the story of my mum’s diagnosis, and an appeal to anyone who’s willing and able to help her get the treatment she needs.

It was extremely hard to believe when my mum called to say that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in August last year. I always saw Ana Piteira as the strongest and most resilient woman on the planet. 

Unfortunately, she received three wrong diagnoses within the first four months, and was given only antibiotics and painkillers. By the time she finally managed to get an appointment with a specialist, she already had stage IV breast cancer, and it had metastasised in the lymphatic system, lungs, bones and head. She had already stopped working due to the massive, painful swelling in her arm (lymphedema). NHS protocol treatments (chemo and radio) followed for nine months. The most recent scan has shown that despite those long and painful treatments, it’s now spreading to the liver and various other parts of the body. Walking, breathing, going up the stairs to her room, driving and do basic tasks (cooking, washing clothes, etc) have been extremely challenging and frustrating at times.

 
The oncologist has suggested that Ana repeat the treatments, but considering the results and the horrible side effects so far, we have decided to take a 'first do no harm' naturopathic route. We have been researching this since August last year and came across The Budwig Protocol (provided by a certified cancer centre led by Dr. Lloyd Jenkins), which aligns with what we are seeking. We strongly believe this would be extremely beneficial in helping her to recover from the side effects of chemo and radiotherapy, boosting her immune system, generally improving her lifestyle and potentially getting it to a stage of remission.

Due to the cancer’s fast progression, we were recommended to immediately start an intensive, three-week treatment at the centre in Spain, which includes a combination of natural remedies, diet and therapies tailored to the individual needs of each person, as well as accommodation and guidance services. She will have to continue with an expensive and specific diet regime at home afterwards that includes a large intake of fresh organic produce and fruit and vegetable juices. As she won’t be able to go back to work soon (she used to bake delicious pizzas), she has been getting a small disability benefit to help paying rent, but will keep struggling to pay the bills and living expenses. For these reasons, we’re also in need of extra aid to pay for a daily support worker to help her follow this intensive regime and to give the best chance of success.


My brother and I have been struggling to make this happen, so we had no other choice than reaching out for help: so that we can be there for our mother, who has been a true fighter all her life and has never given up at any point.

Esta é a história do diagnóstico realizado à minha mãe e um pedido a quem estiver predisposto e com vontade de a ajudar a receber os tratamentos de que precisa.

Foi-nos extremamente difícil acreditar quando a nossa mãe nos ligou a dar a notícia de que tinha sido diagnosticada com cancro da mama, em Agosto do ano passado. Sempre a vimos como a mulher mais forte e corajosa à face do planeta.

Infelizmente, ela recebeu três diagnósticos errados nos primeiros quatro meses, e para tal, foi-lhe prescrito apenas antibióticos e analgésicos. Quando finalmente conseguiu uma consulta com um especialista, já teria que enfrentar o cancro da mama tipo 4, com a inclusão de metástases no sistema linfático, pulmões, ossos e cabeça (crânio).
Parou de trabalhar devido ao enorme e doloroso inchaço do braço (linfedema) e seguiram-se nove meses de quimioterapia e radioterapia proposta no protocolo do Sistema Nacional de Saúde Britânico (NHS). O exame mais recente demonstrou que, apesar dos longos e dolorosos tratamentos, as metástases têm vindo a espalhar-se também para o fígado e outras partes do corpo. Conduzir, subir escadas, caminhar, respirar entre outras tarefas simples do dia-a-dia (cozinhar, lavar a roupa, etc) têm sido muitas vezes extremamente desafiantes e frustrantes.

O oncologista sugeriu que a Ana repetisse os mesmos tratamentos, mas considerando os resultados até hoje conseguidos e os efeitos secundários horríveis, decidimos tomar um caminho Naturopático de "tratar sem prejudicar". Temos vindo a investigar esta matéria desde Agosto do ano passado e demo-nos com o protocolo de Budwig (The Budwig Protocol), protocolo esse que nos foi informado diretamente por um centro certificado de cancro, orientado pelo Doutor Lloyd Jenkins, cujas ideias iam de encontro com as nossas vontades. Acreditamos plenamente que este caminho será extremamente benéfico em ajudá-la a recuperar dos efeitos secundários da quimioterapia e da radioterapia, fortalecendo desta maneira o sistema imunológico, melhorando o seu estilo de vida de uma maneira geral e muito possivelmente, acordar o corpo para voltar a combater.

Devido ao rápido desenvolvimento do cancro, fomos aconselhados a iniciar imediatamente um tratamento intensivo de três semanas num centro de luta contra o cancro em Espanha, que inclui medicamentos naturais, nutrição e terapias individualizadas também como alojamento e acompanhamento pessoal. Após o internamento, será necessário continuar este dispendioso e rigoroso tratamento em casa, que consiste em alimentação de produtos estritamente biológicos assim como o consumo de uma quantidade alta de sumos naturais por dia. Neste momento, a minha mãe está impossibilitada de trabalhar (costumava fazer pizzas deliciosas) e por isso recebe uma pequena ajuda do estado que mesmo assim é insuficiente para suportar todos os custos. Precisa ainda de ajuda financeira para o contracto de uma cuidadora para a ajudar a cumprir este intenso regime para podermos atingir os melhores resultados possíveis. / exponenciar a hipótese de sucesso. 

Eu e o meu irmão André temos tido bastantes dificuldades em ajudá-la e esta é a última hipótese que nos resta, de pedir ajuda a quem puder ajudar. A nossa mãe foi uma guerreira resiliente toda a sua vida e nós queremos apoia-la incondicionalmente.
