Helping Shane and The Root Family
On the evening of August 16th, the Root family got devastating news that 16 year old Shane had fallen from a 50+ foot cliff overlooking the Ohio River to the train tracks below. Shane suffered multiple injuries, including 2 collapsed lungs due to broken ribs, a dislocated elbow, a compound forearm fracture, facial fractures and cuts, and the most serious of all Injuries, brain bleeding and swelling. Thankfully, he did not suffer any spinal injuries.
An EVD in his crown is allowing the staff at Mercy to control drainage and monitor pressure in Shane’s brain. He is sedated, intubated, and on a ventilator. Chest tubes are draining excess air and fluid from both collapsed lungs.
Shane is responding to some stimulation, but due to the brain swelling, they are keeping him sedated. There are promising signs that he is fighting(swinging his arms at being pinched) but, he is a Root and has Kelly Toomey blood running through him ~so that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows them!
The tremendous outpouring of prayers, concern, support and love is greatly appreciated by the entire family. There is obviously a long road of recovery ahead for Shane and the family. But, how fortunate we are to live in a community where so many have reached out because they want to do something to help.
