Effective Teaching: A Lasting Gift
Donazione protetta
My name is Ross Hill and I have taught high school social studies for ten years. I love my job! I get to have fun while making a positive impact on the lives of teenagers. Each year I strive to improve my teaching practices by tweaking lessons and activities or taking professional development or graduate courses. Now, I am ready to tackle the highest level of certification for a teacher, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit organization working to advance accomplished teaching for all students. National Board Certification identifies teachers who meet high standards through a performance-based, peer-reviewed series of assessment components. I am attempting to raise the necessary money to purchase the components of this program.
The National Board certification process is pretty rigorous and can take up to three years, but can be completed in one year, which is what I plan on doing. Over the next school year, I will complete four components that include taking a test, recording my lessons, collecting data, and writing lots and lots of reflections on my teaching practices.
How will this benefit my students?

Studies by outside groups have shown that students of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) gain one to two months of additional learning compared to students in other classrooms and they demonstrate up to three times deeper understanding than their peers. Effective teaching is even more vital for my students, most of whom are considered "children of poverty" and who often lack supportive environments and resources that would help them succeed.
How will this benefit my family?

As you are probably aware, public school teachers are not rolling in the dough. With five children and one on the way (Yes, we know what causes them.), I am always looking for ways to increase my income without having to leave the classroom and go into an administrative position. The state of South Carolina awards a stipend for NBCTs of $5000 per year for five years. This would be a significant financial blessing to my family.
How will this benefit me?

Going through the National Board process will make me a better teacher as well as open doors for me professionally.
I feel I have the ability and the drive to accomplish this goal, but not the accessible funds to cover the cost.
The certification begins with a $75 registration fee and then $475 for each of the four components, for a grand total of $1,975. While this process is rigorous and expensive, I feel like it has a great return on investment. One school year of work + $1,975 can yield decades of benefits to hundreds of students, $25,000 for my family and a lifetime of skills and professional recognition for myself.
Once I've secured the funds, I will register for the components, and hopefully complete all of them during the 2018-2019 school year and find out my results by December 2019.
Your financial support in helping me become an even more effective teacher would have a tremendous impact on countless lives and would truly be a lasting gift.
Gratefully,
Ross
