My name is Joel. Recently, during my volunteering work in Nias, Sumatra (Indonesia), I had the opportunity to meet Windi. We brought her some donations and took the time to listen to her story. It was a heart breaking tale that I simply couldn't ignore.
On December 6, 2020, at the age of seventeen, her life changed dramatically. While traveling with others to a village event, Windi sensed that something was wrong. The driver was speeding, and soon the car lost control. It must have rolled over multiple times. She recalls that when the vehicle finally came to a stop, she found herself upside down, unable to move, feeling trapped and terrified.
Villagers managed to pull her from the wreckage, but she fainted immediately afterward. The nearest hospital was about 20 minutes away, and it was there that she regained consciousness. The doctor explained what had happened: both of her femurs were broken, and immediate surgery was required.
However, like many others, she had no insurance, and her family lacked any savings. Overwhelmed with despair, she returned home, enduring immense pain. Over time, her bones healed, but in a way that left her unable to walk or stand for more than 30 seconds. Since then, constant pain, frustration, and helplessness have become her daily reality.
Before high school, she had friends and enjoyed life. She participated in various activities and attended church every Sunday. It was a typical teenage life in Nias.
It’s difficult for me to come to terms with this. A young person condemned to remain at home. Most of her friends have moved away. Now she sits behind a small table in her little shop, where selling sweets is her only means of feeling somewhat useful.
Sonja, another volunteer, and I took her to the hospital the following day. We needed to find out if it was possible to restore her life back to normal. With the new diagnosis and x-rays, we contacted doctors and hospitals. Thanks to a surgeon I know in Switzerland, we have a clear understanding of the treatment that lies ahead for her (Many Thanks to you Andy). It's a long journey, but everything should be healed and well after two hard years. Windi immediately agreed, saying she can do it. The estimated cost for the surgery alone is approximately 9,000 USD or 7,800 Euros, if we double that amount, we should have everything we need: preparation, surgery, and rehabilitation. It's a significant sum, but a small price for a normal life. Together, we can make this happen. Let's help Windi walk again. Nias is a fantastic surf island; perhaps we could even see her riding the waves in the future!
First campaign got deleted immediately. Bank location is in Switzerland, and I am a Swiss citizen. All the donations are going towards Windi.
