Join us in sponsoring a Honduran family seeking asylum in the U.S.!

The money we raise together will help ensure that the family feels welcome in our home and our community, and transitions as quickly as possible to independent living. 

Every little bit helps! 

It will be used to cover transportation costs, which can include travel from the detention center in Texas where they now are to our home in New Paltz, N.Y.  And because asylum seekers can't get drivers licenses, it will be used to help cover local travel needs when we aren't home or for trips to immigration hearings in New York  City or elsewhere.

It will cover legal aid during those and other hearings, and be used for healthcare, which asylum seekers must pay out of pocket as they are not eligible for Medicaid. 

It will pay for clothing, and contribute to communications costs, so they can stay in touch with family and friends. It will allow them to enroll in ESL and other education classes.

And while asylum seekers are not allowed to work in the U.S. until their immigration status is confirmed, the money we raise will allow them to attend work training programs so they can support themselves as soon as possible. 

One of the family members is  with us already, and we we expect others soon. Exactly when and how many is still unclear, because the asylum process is complicated and uncertain.  To protect their privacy, we are not sharing  their names or exactly why they are seeking asylum. But they made the difficult decision to leave family and friends back home, and traveled many thousands of difficult miles to get here.
