Help us get back to South Africa to support my mum

‘My daughter I want to encourage you to keep on, keeping on’ is what my mum said to me on the phone just two days ago before she is due to have a cancerous lump removed from her breast this week. I have had a nasty flu virus and have been feeling very emotional being so far away from her at this time and yet even now she chooses to encourage me while trying to remain optimistic about her own surgery and the outcome.
You see it’s these exact words that I have heard her say so many countless times in my life that has helped me to become the strong, persevering woman I am today. As a hardworking and devoted single mum, she raised my sister and me with a set of wonderful values…to work hard, try your best, show compassion and most importantly never to give up. Her love and steadfast encouragement all these years has laid the foundations that have helped me cope and get through so many struggles of my own, including meningitis, appendix and kidney sepsis, a brain injury, a move to a new country, a relationship breakdown, raising two sons as a lone parent, losing my job and being homeless to name a few. All this time mum has been there, watching my tears and triumphs, listening to my hopes and heartaches and yet still choosing to cheer me on from the other side of the world to keep going.
But this fundraiser is not about me. This is about honouring my mum and the best way I can do that is to be by her side now when she needs me and her grandsons most. To hold her hand and to lovingly cheer her to keep on, keeping on. To spend as much time together as we can, remembering the good times.
Mum has her surgery this Thursday, 26th September and we then need to wait for the results from her lymph biopsy. I am trusting and praying that all will be okay, but I want to be prepared and ready to fly out in the next few weeks, in case she needs extensive treatment and I can then go back and help look after her.
As this news of her cancer has come very suddenly, I just don’t have the financial means to pay for flights and living costs for myself and my two sons to enable us to return to South Africa to support her. I am still repaying debts and loans from having been out of work for health reasons a year ago, so this has had a significant financial impact on us.
I would be incredibly grateful for any amount that you are able to donate to enable me and my boys to return home to be with her at this crucial time. Thank you so much for the time you have taken in reading about my beautiful mum and I hope that her motto has inspired you to keep on, keeping on when life throws those unexpected curve balls.
