Help Tonya Keep her Home!
Doação protegida
Tonya needs $4000 in order to stay in her home of 29 years. Due to circumstances beyond her control (in large part because of her own generosity to others in extreme need this year), she is behind in paying her rent and in jeopardy of losing her home. In court last Friday Tonya was informed that if she doesn’t come up with $4000 payment for rent arrears by June 26th she will be forced to surrender her home.
Tonya has worked in public service for nearly 20 years. She has raised her son, tirelessly supported her family, and has been an irreplaceable part of her community and neighborhood which includes many who are also struggling in this racist economy. And in a time when cost of living continues to skyrocket, those who are earning non-profit salaries are challenged to keep up. Nine months ago, Tonya lost her full time non-profit job. For 17 years she worked as a Case Manager doing HIV, HEP C, and syphilis screening for LGBTQ folks. She currently works very hard as a Navigator at a non-profit Women’s Wellness Program, where she supports women who struggle with opiate addiction and co-occurring PTSD. This is where my MSW internship has been for the past 8 months and where I began to get close to hilarious, feisty, wise, and deeply loving Tonya.
Tonya also has several medical conditions that need urgent attention. She has chronic asthma and sciatica and was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This causes her severe nerve pain throughout her whole body, especially in her arms and shoulders. Tonya has been sleeping on an air mattress and needs to purchase a better mattress to support her body to heal. Medical expenses have prevented her from receiving the care she needs. Due to the urgency of her housing situation, we are asking your help to raise $4000, which is the minimum amount she needs to be able to stay in her home. Anything beyond this will support her health which is in critical condition - but she needs a home to be able to heal and continue working!
Unfortunately there are no services for a woman like Tonya even though she is very experienced at navigating social services. Part of her job is helping women access these services which are more accessible for those who have previously been homeless, have documented experience of domestic violence, have dependent children, or are HIV+. Tonya has missed several days of work to go to the Human Resources Administration, Home Base, Get a One Shot Deal, Welfare Office, and Catholic Charities. She has been denied help from all of these. In addition, given that her rent is $1174/month and she works 30 hours a week, she doesn’t qualify for Section 8, food stamps, or other governmental aid.
Moving forward, Tonya has a plan to make ends meet, but she needs help to get out from under this right now. Please donate what you are able and amplify this ask by talking with your friends, family, & communities, posting on your facebook page, etc.
Thank you, this $4000 will make a huge impact in Tonya’s life.
