Fire relief fund for teacher Mr Golden and family
Donation protected
We are parents who want to help our kids beloved teacher Cary Golden and his family who suffered a devastating tragedy when a fire burned down their home of 20 years on Jan 5, 2021. What started as an electrical fire in a bedroom that Mr Golden desperately tried to put out, quickly raged out of control. While the Goldens with their two children, two dogs and a cat made it out safely, they lost everything, including 7 of the family’s other pets.
Our hearts are broken for our cherished teacher and his family, as they have to experience this great loss and trauma, on top of all the stressors of the pandemic.
Although insurance covers the ultimate rebuilding of their home, they will all be living in a trailer for at least a year. It is our great hope that the community will rally around them to help them in their need now and to alleviate the astronomical bills that insurance does not cover.
The Goldens need essentials such as clothes, bedding, toiletries, food etc. They are also saddled with $6,000 dollars in veterinary bills, incurred in the efforts to save some of their pets. When they do eventually move back into their rebuilt house, there will be unknown future expenses for everything else lost inside the home.
Cary Golden is a devoted teacher who cares deeply for his students, checking in on them regularly, especially through the pandemic. He has been teaching English and dual language for 34 years at IS318, a public middle school in Brooklyn with a large concentration of low income students.
What also makes Mr Golden so remarkable and extraordinary is how he has so humbly, yet single handedly, ignited a love for theater and the thrill of Broadway in countless children over 3 decades.
Mr. Golden has always believed in the importance of taking kids out of the classroom and into the world for dynamic and enlightening class trips. In 1988 he introduced students to one of his greatest passions… Broadway shows!
The first Broadway trip to see The Secret Garden was a huge success. Eventually the theatre trips evolved into a robust Broadway Theatre appreciation program.
He mission has always been to expose kids, who would not otherwise have had the opportunity, to experience this great art. Most of his students were seeing a Broadway show for the first time. In some cases, the outing marked the student’s first trip into Manhattan.
Through his relationships with theatre representatives across Broadway, he secures discounted and sometimes free tickets to top Broadway shows. Students have seen classics like Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserable! In recent years, kids got to see new hit musicals such as Beautiful, The Prom, Come From Away, Kinky Boots, School of Rock, Frozen, Hadestown and To Kill A Mockingbird.
The Broadway trips are alway open to any student who wants to go. The kids who take his Broadway class, watch and discuss movies that were at one time on Broadway, such as Oklahoma, Showboat, Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Aladdin, King Kong and The Lion King. His classroom itself is like a NYC Broadway museum, home to all of his Playbills, ticket stubs and theatre memorabilia!
Teaching and sharing in this profound way has been Mr. Golden’s true devotion for over 30 years. Watching these young students move through the city with curiosity and joy is truly extraordinary. As soon as the Broadway lights are back up, he plans to pick up right where he left off!
