Hello friends! Recently, the Kirchner family took a huge leap of faith and we've found New Orleans to be a warm, welcoming hug of a home. Max is working hard writing the hours away and charming the tips out of lovely NOLA diners, and SJ just completed her 1L year at Tulane and is thrilled to be serving as a judicial intern in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court Domestic Division. Things are cruising along gloriously, which is exactly when health issues tend to crop up (because the Universe has a great sense of humor?).
In addition to the joy we’ve experienced so far, I am now faced with hefty medical costs for a procedure that will excise seven clusters of pre-cancerous cells developing on my cervix (google it! it's the prettiest most functional donut ever). The hope is that swift action will prevent these cells from progressing further to cervical cancer.
Planned Parenthood is out of network for my skimpy insurance plan, and they can no longer offer sliding scale cost to patients who fall under the poverty line (me, atm). As such, I'll have to go retail with a "preferred provider" and am faced with very high deductible, and very little $ on hand.
Because we live in America, where healthcare is not yet a basic human right, I am looking at over $2000 in medical costs (and this is WITH insurance). Hard costs include: an additional biopsy, LEEP procedure, and follow-up appointments with my new OBGYN. These costs are something I am not able to pay for out of pocket at this time. My auto-immune disease means that I will take a bit longer to heal, and this issue is a bit more time sensitive than I can swing.
I am loathe to to ask for help, but I am also living on student loans and working pro-bono this Summer at the Civil District Court, as well as volunteering my time to several organizations that provide advocacy and healthcare to members of our community. I won’t receive my fall funding until after the recommended date for my procedure, and I’m hoping you can find it in your heart to help me bridge the gap.
Thank you for reading, I appreciate you! I don’t know how to put into words how angry I am that we live in a country where crowdfunding healthcare is the norm... What I can say is that all of my efforts are focused on changing the current system that is designed to keep us poor and unhealthy.
