My name is Savannah Esqueda. In the spring of 2021, my mother was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, an aggressive type of breast cancer. She went through aggressive chemotherapy and radiation and later had a double mastectomy, removing both breasts. My mother's tumor started as the size of a quarter, and when the doctors removed it, it was the size of a grapefruit. After the surgery, my mother continued chemotherapy in the form of pills and radiation every day. Shortly after finishing radiation, not even a year later, my mother had another biopsy that revealed another occurrence of breast cancer which unfortunately is more aggressive than the last tumor. She is again receiving chemotherapy and now immunotherapy.
Since her cancer diagnosis, my mother has not been able to work. In addition, she has not been able to give her 100% to my younger sister, with down syndrome, who is being homeschooled. My mother also cared for my children while I worked and attended school. My dad has worked two jobs for a few years now, being the leading provider in our household. He was given the option of resigning or working in close contact with his clients, but he chose not to put my mother at risk of becoming ill. My dad decided to resign from his main job, where he took a significant pay cut to get another job overnight so that he could care for my mom during the day and attend all of her appointments with her. This month my parents will be traveling to Seattle, where my mom will be receiving services at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
