Help my Mum keep her home after Dad's cancer battle.

Hi my name is Aimee and I am hoping to raise some funds for my mum to keep the family home which she shared with my dad for 22 years.

In June 2024, just months after my mum bravely finished her second battle with breast cancer, our world was turned upside down again—my dad was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour.

By August, he suffered a major seizure and was left completely bedridden. He couldn’t talk, eat, or even move. My mum and close family members became his full-time carers—learning how to feed him, manage his stoma and catheter, administer medications, and provide round-the-clock care at home. In November 2024, at just 66 years old, my dad passed away peacefully at home with my mum by his side.

During this time, my mum had to come out of work to care for him full-time. She hasn't been able to return to work since, and with no income, it's had a hugh impact on her finances. She's currently struggling just to get by day to day.

My dad worked hard all his life and ran his own business for over 35 years. He always had everything organized, including a will written about 10 years ago using an online service. Sadly, that decision has left my mum in an awful position during the worst time of her life. He always kept his finances in order, including maintaining life insurance. However, over the past four years, he suffered from a severe and complex fistula—his surgeon even described it as the second worst case in the country. Due to undergoing 19 operations, he missed the renewal of his life insurance last year, which unfortunately led to a lapse in coverage that could have otherwise been avoided

Despite the will clearly stating that my mum is the sole beneficiary which is just the house to be in her name no assets or money is left, the company that prepared the will included fine print making themselves the executors— With fees amounting to £19,998.72 ” or they would sell our family home to cover their costs. This is the same home where my parents lived for 22 years, filled with memories, and where my dad took his final breath.

After many discussions, the company agreed to reduce the fee to £12,621 (£3,123 for the solicitor costs and £9,498 to the will company) but only if it’s paid in full. The will company did nothing to earn this money, yet they hold the future of my mum’s home over her head. With the cost of my dad’s care and funeral, and his business going into liquidation, my mum has no savings left and unable to pay the fees's leaving her in fear of loosing the house.

She’s devastated, exhausted, and still unable to properly grieve.

My mum is reluctant to ask for help—she feels like she’s begging—but I believe that in times like these, we can lean on the kindness of others. Even a small contribution would mean the world if you can not donate please share this would be greatly appreciated. If, by some miracle, we raise more than what’s needed, the extra will be donated equally to Brain Tumour Research and the local hospice home care team, whose support was invaluable.

In September, our family will also be doing an inflatable run to raise money for the same cause.

Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and supporting. It truly means more than words can say and truly appreciate any support. Thank you.
Even if this stops just one person going with such a company they will avoid all this horrendous process that will be a major bonus.
