Life can change in an instant. In the span of just a few months, my mother faced cancer progression, a stem cell transplant, my stepdad’s passing, and financial burdens no one should have to face while trying to heal. Now, she’s left navigating over $230,000 in debt, all while recovering from life-threatening complications of her transplant. I’m asking for your support to help her find stability, peace, and a chance to focus on her health without the crushing weight of debt.
The Full Story
In October 2020, my mother was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a condition that affects the bone marrow. After years of managing her illness, her condition worsened to the point where she needed a stem cell transplant to survive. In September 2024, as she prepared to start chemotherapy, she contracted COVID-19, delaying her transplant by two weeks. She recovered, showing incredible strength, and proceeded with the transplant on October 15, 2024.
At the same time, my stepdad, her devoted partner, fell critically ill from end-stage liver disease. Over the course of several weeks, he underwent procedures to drain over 60 pounds of ascites fluid, only for doctors to confirm his liver and kidneys were failing. Due to his age and overall health, he was not eligible for a liver transplant, which was the only thing that could have saved his life.
While my mom was isolated in the hospital without an immune system, my stepdad was bedbound at home. They were unable to see each other one final time. On October 24, 2024, the week after my mom's transplant, he passed away peacefully at home under hospice care.
My mother faced the devastating loss of her husband while still fighting for her life. During her hospital stay, she developed Grade 4 Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GvHD), a painful and severe complication affecting her lower GI tract, as well as severe chemotherapy burns. Steroids used to treat GvHD led to steroid-induced psychosis, causing additional suffering and confusion during an already unbearable time.
She was finally discharged on November 20, 2024, but her fight is far from over.
The Financial Burden
While managing my mother’s finances during her hospital stay, I discovered a heartbreaking reality: over $150,000 in debt across credit cards and personal loans taken out in her name without her knowledge. In Texas, a community property state, she inherited both this debt and an additional $80,000 in debts solely in my stepdad’s name.
She’s now facing an overwhelming legal and financial battle to distinguish shared vs. separate debts, navigate probate proceedings, and fight for a path forward. All while living on only 70% of her paycheck due to short-term disability.
Meanwhile, I’ve been off work since September, using accrued leave to serve as her full-time caregiver and, during those weeks, as my stepdad’s caregiver as well.
We are doing everything we can, but the mountain ahead feels insurmountable.
