My name is Elaine Vaughan. My Jamaican friends may remember me as Elaine Niederer. I lived in Jamaica from 1991 until 2007 when I returned to the United States. I currently live in Bluffton South Carolina. During the years I lived in Jamaica, Mimi and Jesse became my family and we have been close friends for over 30 years.
By now, we've all seen the devastation that Hurricane Melissa caused on my beloved Island in the Sun. Mimi and Jesse survived the storm. While they are "okay," they are NOT okay.
I've just learned that the storm ripped their brand new roof off, caused structural damage to their home of nearly 30 years, and completely destroyed everything they own. In Mimi's words, "Roof is gone, water everywhere but at least we made it. I'm good but pretty much homeless. All furniture damaged, structural damage, etc. It sure is a rough time. Raining heavily now. We don't seem to catch a break. Gas is rare. Won't get power back for months."
Having lived there, I know how bleak their situation is and that it will be a long road to recovery. With your help, they will have the resources, strength, and resilience to rebuild their home and lives.
100% of donated funds will be transferred to Mimi in Jamaica. The funds will be used to purchase new furnishings for their home and repair their roof.
Any donation, small or large, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your compassion.
