Six years ago when I was going through chemotherapy, my sister Melanie cut off her hair and had it made into a wig for me. She and her family also drove halfway across the country to come stay with us in Houston while I was at MD Anderson. Even though I am the older sister, I have often felt like Mel is the big sister because she is always taking care of me! Now, it is my turn to help take care of her. It was a complete shock to all of us after Mel's surgery at the end of June when we found out that was supposed to be "just a cyst" was actually a rare and aggressive form of endometrial cancer. Mel is already kicking cancer's butt! This is not a journey anyone ever willingly signs on for, but Melanie's faith has already inspired so many of us. It is an expensive journey, with trips to UC Irvine two weeks out of every three weeks from now until the end of November when she will finish chemotherapy. Time off work for my brother-in-law Andrew, hotel rooms, all these costs add to the stress of the situation which is enough stress by itself.
