OMG, Maximillion is graduating! That’s right, after a long 12 years of IEPs, behavior meetings, teacher conferences, and loads of sick days, our special needs son is graduating high school! It has been the longest but most incredible journey, and we are here at the end, ready to celebrate!!!! Because Max has severe autism and is non-verbal, we won’t be celebrating like others. There will be no big party or senior trip. No car, no going off to college or gap year.

What we would like to do is give Max the graduation gift of travel. Max lives to go on long, long road trips. He loves rest areas more than anything and really enjoys touching the trees and playing in the dirt. He loves campfires and nature walks. He loves going to new places and seeing new things. He loves family road trips. He likes to look out the window and see his surroundings. He loves the sound and feel of rain and the howl of wind.

Max also has major health issues and sensory needs that make regular trips hard. He is extremely allergic to any mold or harsh cleaners, which make reasonably priced hotels unhealthy and unsafe. Hotels and Airbnbs often contain hidden mold in walls, HVAC systems, or anywhere, which makes us unable to stay. We have had to leave many trips in the middle due to the extreme sickness any mold can cause. Max also needs privacy; his sensory-seeking activities need privacy, and we cannot share a single hotel room with him, which means we either have to have 2 connecting rooms or a room with some side area/bed for him, which then usually doubles our costs.

SOOO… we have decided the best thing to do is to buy a little tent trailer for him! That way, we can take him all over the country to see many different things without compromising his health or happiness! We have settled on a tent trailer because not only can we tow it behind our current car, but he will have his own little room to be alone in!

Max has worked so hard over these last 12 years (and so have we!), and we would really like to make these next few years the best we can for him. With a trailer like this, we can literally give him the world.
