From Joanna’s wife, Zoë Aguilar:
Dear friends and family,
We’re reaching out to you on behalf of my loving wife Joanna Aguilar, who at 32 years old was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a rare and fast-developing type of blood cancer that requires intense and extended treatment. To say we’re devastated and still reeling from this unexpected diagnosis is an understatement, but we’re just as confident in her full recovery and remission.
Our Jo is a devoted and compassionate healthcare worker with the most gentle hand and heart for her residents and colleagues alike. She is the epitome of a genuinely selfless person who puts any and every one before herself. She’s truly the glue and gravity that holds all of us together, and to know her is to be loved by her. Even in the hardest moments of her treatment, her worries are with her loved ones and how we’re processing the trials and tribulations that have and will come during this time, and yet she still somehow finds the heart to make us laugh.
She’s the bravest and most resilient person I know. She makes you want to be a better person, and to know her and to love her is a gift. She’s met every obstacle head on with such bravery and strength, but even the greatest of us need a helping hand when life throws a curveball that no one could ever see coming at them.
She has been inpatient since the diagnosis on July 19th, and will remain inpatient for another month for acute treatment and chemotherapies, and then will be followed by 10 months of outpatient treatment. The road to recovery is long, and although Jo is a fighter like no other it’s now our turn to show up and support her like she always has for us so that she can focus on the most important thing - healing and recovery.
Please keep Joanna and her loved ones in your thoughts and prayers, and please share this link across any and all platforms to help support Joanna and her family navigate this difficult time with treatment, travel, and living costs, and anything unforeseen that may come due to an extended leave of absence from work to complete treatment.
Every share and any donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful impact in caring for Joanna, as she’s always cared for every single person she meets. Any and all donations will go directly to Joanna and her care.
We thank each and every one of you that takes the time to read, share, donate, and care for our Jo just as we do. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your compassion, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
With all of our love, hope, and appreciation,
Joanna & Zoë Aguilar
