Help Ida study Theoretical Physics at University of Oxford

My name is Ida Åsljung, I’m a student from Sweden looking for support to fund my Master of Science in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, starting in October 2024.

Having finished my last exams at King’s College London, I am very happy and proud to soon be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Philosophy. These past three years have been challenging in many aspects, as a self-funded EU-student I have worked full-time every summer and part-time during term time and still maintained a First Class average in both disciplines.

More importantly, it has also been rewarding in so many ways; working with inspiring people during my three years on the committee of the KCL Womxn in Physics Society (currently as co-president), completing a research internship in Astroparticle physics and now finally having received offers to study masters from several of the top universities such as University of Oxford.

The offer which I received from Oxford is for a masters which I have been aiming for since the first year of my undergraduate; namely a Master of Science in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. A dream come true! Not only is this an amazing opportunity to study at an institution with research at the frontier of physics, but the courses offered in the masters perfectly align with my interest in foundations of physics, many of these courses would only be possible to study as a PhD student in Sweden.

Being a self-funded student, I will not be able to pursue this master without financial help. As a result of Brexit, I must pay international fees and moreover universities have not yet supplemented this with many scholarships for EU students. My tuition fees for this course are £36 000 and student loans from Sweden will only be able to cover maintenance costs. My personal savings along with scholarships I have applied to from Sweden amount to approximately £16 500, which leaves £19 500 that I must find elsewhere. Therefore, as a last resort, I’m here to humbly ask for your help – if you are able to donate some money towards my tuition fees, I would be extremely grateful. I realise we are in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and so if you would like to support me but cannot do so financially, please feel free to share this fundraiser. Any help is very much appreciated!

Mitt namn är Ida Åsljung, jag är en 23-årig student från småländska skogarna som behöver hjälp för att kunna finansiera en master vid University of Oxford i England med start i oktober 2024.

I mars fick jag beskedet från Oxford att jag har blivit antagen till att studera en Master i Matematisk och Teoretisk Fysik – en master som jag sedan ett par år tillbaka har drömt om att komma in på. Förutom att detta är en fantastisk möjlighet att studera vid en av världens allra främsta fysikinstitutioner är denna utbildning perfekt utformad för mitt intresse inom fysikens grunder, flera av kurserna som jag kommer att läsa läses även vanligtvis på doktorandnivå i Sverige. Drömmen är att efter denna utbildning doktorera i teoretisk fysik.

Tyvärr har det varit väldigt svårt att lista ut hur jag ska finansiera denna utbildning; till följd av Brexit är terminsavgifterna nu mycket höga och samtidigt har universiteten inte hunnit komplettera detta med stipendium för EU studenter. Studieavgiften för denna ett år långa utbildning kostar £36 000 och CSN kommer endast att kunna täcka levnadskostnader. Jag har sökt och fortsätter att söka till alla stipendier från svenska fonder som jag kan hitta och mitt mål, vilket jag bedömer realistiskt, är att få stipendium för totalt £16 500. Då detta är min sista utväg ber jag nu därför ödmjukt om hjälp – om du har möjligheten att bidra med en slant så uppskattar jag detta något enormt. Jag förstår att många inte kan det, men om du ändå vill stödja mig får du hemskt gärna dela denna insamling.

Om jag inte lyckas få ihop tillräckligt med pengar för att påbörja denna utbildning kommer jag att donera det som insamlas här till UNICEF.
