My name is Janet Alexander, founder of Hearts and Minds Learning Center. After years as a public school teacher, I saw firsthand how children were pushed forward without mastering foundational skills. The system’s one-size-fits-all approach left many students behind, and I knew there had to be a better way. That’s why I created Hearts and Minds; a place where every child’s unique needs are recognized and addressed.
The academic crisis is real. In 2024, only 31% of 4th graders performed at or above “Proficient” in reading, and scores continue to decline. The most painful part isn’t the numbers. It’s what children start to believe about themselves: “I’m not smart.” “I can’t do school.” “I’m behind.” At Hearts and Minds, we developed the Heart and Mind Method, an intervention-based model that uses specialized assessments to understand each child’s relationship to learning, motivation, and skill gaps. Our individualized programs consistently increase reading, writing, or math skills by 1–3 grade levels in 3–6 months, including for special needs and gifted students. Our school systems need this type of support now more than ever.
We’ve supported over 2,000 students, including hundreds who previously failed standardized tests and later reached mastery levels. One student, for example, arrived two grade levels behind in reading. After six months, they not only caught up in their reading skills, but began to excel, regaining confidence and joy in learning and reading. Parents tell us the biggest shift isn’t just academic, it’s emotional: kids stop fighting school, confidence returns, and family dynamics improve. This is not just tutoring; it’s restoring a child’s self-perception while rebuilding skills. It changes life trajectories.
We’re ready to expand, strengthen our infrastructure, and scale what works, but we need our community’s help. Hearts and Minds specializes in working with neurodivergent students, providing individualized support that transforms both academic and emotional outcomes.
Your donation will fund learning materials, curriculum writers, software for tracking outcomes, teacher training, support staff, stronger systems, and third-party research to validate our results. We are seeking to scale with the intention of training teachers and creating massive impact for students across the United States.
