This campaign is on behalf of Dondrie Burnham, the finest woman, friend, artist and colleague I know. The first to offer help but the last to ask for it, she needs some support right now and her team is reaching out.
Dondrie has been managing two autoimmune disorders for many years, coping with misdiagnoses and diagnoses, flareups, hospitalizations and unexpected health setbacks with grace, humor and patience. Of course, when you consider her creative, interpersonal and professional accomplishments, you might never have known any of this. That's just who she is.
As of this week, Dondrie has answers under the mantle of "incurable but manageable" with dual diagnoses of FSGS , a nephrotic disorder, and Lupus. She received this news with her trademark dry wit and poise. Regardless of her unfailing spirit, the two disorders have severe impact on her physical well-being: while her symptoms are usually manageable and allow her to work (with a work ethic most people could never touch), right now she is in in-patient care at Mount Sinai and unable to work. And, with the overarching concerns about healthcare in the United States right now, her future treatment and ability to pay for it is also in peril. Financial stress of medical problems will always exacerbate the original problem and right now, she needs to focus on healing.
Thus, our goal: to give Dondrie the break she has deserved, but never asked for, a long time. Right now, her number one priority must be her health: developing a manageable protocol, a lot of rest, and time to plan next steps. This campaign will let her do that by taking some of the burden of rent and medical bills off her shoulders.
We are asking for any assistance you can offer this amazing woman, who has given all of us so much. Donations are of course appreciated, but we know that many of us are in similar boats right now. If you can't give, share (but try to give?).
