TheSultana Association of Descendants and Friends is an amazing community that is devoted and dedicated to keeping the memory alive of the Sultana disaster, the worst maritime diaster in US history and the one that most people have never heard of. The steamboat was carrying nearly 2,200 passengers, on a steamboat that was built to carry less than 400. Most of those passengers were Union soldiers who were returning home after fighting in the Civil War and had been captured and held in the Confederate prisons of Andersonville and Cahaba. In the dark of the night on April 27, 1865 the boilers of the Sultana exploded just north of Memphis, Tennessee, sending the men, women and children on the Sultana into the cold waters of the Mississippi river. More than 1,100 of the passengers on board the Sultana that night perished.
The Sultana Association of Descendants and Friends is made up of descendants of those who were on the Sultana and were killed or survived and of those who love history, even though they have no family connection to the Sultana disaster. What we share is a love for history and a desire to keep this story of the Sultana, and the memory of those who were on the boat that fateful night of April 27, 1865, alive.
Although the Association has been in existence for more than 30 years, we've done a lot of recent changes and improvements to the Sultana Association -- a lovely new website, an online 2021 meeting to meet the challenges due to COVID-19, and some to-be-announced events later this year. We also have plans to open an online store and sell Sultana Association merchandise like t-shirts and caps. We've grown our membership and are working on growing our Sultana community. We want to spread the word about the Sultana and the Sultana Association.
All this takes time and money. We need help to fund the website and the hosting and also keep growing with more to offer members of the Sultana Association. We appreciate your donations and help so we can fulfill our mission to keep history alive.
