Help Baltimore City teachers fund summer camp
Donazione protetta
Freedom Dreamers Collaborative (FDC) was formed by a group of four talented Baltimore City teachers (Johnetta Moore, Nailah Henry, Tyrese Alsup, and Tonette Campbell) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We formed Freedom Dreamers Collaborative because we wanted to do more for students and families than what currently exists within our educational infrastructure. Freedom Dreamers Collaborative’s mission is to create spaces that see and value communities of color and provide access to tools and/or opportunities for them to thrive. Through collaborative spaces that address the dimensions of wellness within communities of color, Freedom Dreaming Collaborative seeks to amplify voices, provide joy, a sense of mattering, self-love, and self-determination.
Our action to establish a Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School site in Baltimore City is rooted in our desire to center students' holistic wellbeing within academically enriching spaces. Baltimore City Students who are enrolled in our summer program have the opportunity to participate in a culturally empowering curriculum full of valuable enrichment activities that build a sense of belonging and community.
How will the funds be used?
Our program provides a full day, free of charge, summer school program with a culturally responsive reading curriculum, enrichment opportunities, and parent engagement offerings.
$1,500 Supports our full Summer programming for a single scholar. This includes: Reading Curriculum & Supporting Books; Field Trips; Art & Enrichment Activities; Classroom Supplies; Parent Engagement Support; and Staff Training & Compensation.
Implementing this program has been shown to, on average, increase reading gains by five months and avoid summer learning loss while creating an environment where participants and their families are seen, heard, and valued in such a way that increases their sense of self and their desire to engage social action together. Our estimated operating cost for Summer 2022 is $80,000. We're hoping to raise these funds to expand our capacity to offer this free summer enrichment program to more of our Harlem Park community.
