Steve Drake, a long time resident of Lancaster, PA, has recently been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers at the un-imaginable age of 46. As you might guess, this came as a total shock to him, his family, and friends. Steve was an accomplished Chef, having worked at JM’s Bistro, the Keares Restaurant Group, and the Belvedere Inn where he won The Silver Spoon Award for 6 years in a row. He is an alumnus of Johnson and Wales University’s College of Culinary Arts.
Unfortunately because of the Alzheimer’s disease, Steve will never be able to work again. He and his wife, Jannette, are moving to Richmond, VA, where he has family and friends, so that they can help his wife with caregiving duties. Unfortunately, in most cases Alzheimer’s attacks its victims several years prior to being diagnosed. Steve’s memory began to be affected over the last several years, but it was not diagnosed until a couple of weeks ago. The memory issues kept Steve from working at his customary high level, and he found himself without health insurance.
We have no idea how much money will be needed until we get further into Steve’s care and treatment. The future holds much uncertainty, but one thing for sure is that without health insurance, it will be very difficult to get Steve the treatment and medications that he will need. Social Security Disability will eventually help and the family is providing financial support, but it is not nearly enough. We hope and pray for a cure, but we desperately need financial assistance to get Steve settled in Richmond, and continue his medical care.
