My name is Brenda, and I’m reaching out for support as I face one of the most difficult times in my life. Two weeks ago, I became homeless and have been staying in a hotel with my two Scotties, Hank and Stormy, who are my family and my reason to keep going. We made our way from North Carolina to Vermilion, South Dakota, hoping for a fresh start and a peaceful place to live while I manage my health. I’m currently waiting to hear back from HUD about housing, but I don’t know how long the process will take. In the meantime, I’ve run out of funds to stay at the hotel, and I’m struggling to cover basic needs like food for my dogs and a safe place for us to stay.
My health has taken a serious turn. I’m living with stage 4 lung cancer and am now in need of palliative care. I also deal with severe anemia, edema, and thyroid issues, which have left me unable to walk without a cane and in need of regular transfusions. The physical challenges have made it impossible for me to work, and I often need help with daily tasks, including caring for Hank and Stormy. Before my health declined, I was able to work and take my dogs for walks, but now even simple activities are a struggle. Despite everything, Hank and Stormy give me a reason to live and help me focus on taking care of myself each day.
I’m asking for help to cover the costs of a deposit and first month’s rent for a small apartment that allows pets, as well as funds for temporary lodging, pet food, and a pet sitter to help with Hank and Stormy. Your support will not only help us find stability and safety, but it will also ease the anxiety and stress that have triggered severe health flare-ups. I am deeply grateful for any help you can give—your kindness will make a real difference in our lives and help us find hope and peace during this challenging time.
