I am horrified by these poor innocent animals being burned to death in the thousands by the Australian bushfires. The fires have been out of control as you have seen in the media. We have been told that one third of the entire New South Wales state population has died. South Australia has also been hit hard and there are emergency teams out there looking for survivors.
I am raising money for three Koala organizations:
SAVEM (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management)
Friends of the Koala
Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie
I am in contact with all three organizations and will split the funds between the three and go to the facilities of the two in New South Wales myself to donate and see how else I can help. I will do this on January 25th and 26th. I will take pictures to show you exactly what I see on my visits, how they are helping the Koalas and the ones you are sponsoring the recovery of. Please help these poor little creatures who are too slow to run away from the fires. It is heartbreaking :( Here is a video showing the difficult process of how they treat a Koala for burns at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital:
Here are the websites if you would like to take a look.
I spoke with the head of the clinic and she said they receive more koalas than any other koala unit in New South Wales and need as much help as they can get. They don’t have a sponsor like some of the hospitals so they struggle to keep afloat with their animals. They have a lovely facility which they need to expand to cope with the quantities. They will be giving me a tour and I shall make the donation once I have seen the facility in person.https://www.savem.org.au/
This organization is in dire need to assist burn victims. Members of SAVEM also work for Adelaide & Hills Koala Rescue. I have spoken to SAVEM as they are the ones on the ground helping primarily the Kangaroo Island koala burn victims. My contact there is Dr. Rachel Westcott, who is the main coordinator. They will be buying supplies for the burn victims with our donations.
This incredible facility is doing so much to help the Koalas and burn victims as you saw in the video link above. They are planning to expand their facility and make a breeding program, implement many water drinking stations, and lastly, create a “koala ark”. I will be sponsoring a number of koalas there with our donations after my tour of the facility.
