Lexie’s ONH Treatment

Lexie has been approved to participate in a clinical treatment study called SCOTS2 (Stem Cell Opthalmology Treatment Study II) for the second time! After seeing a 35% increase in the left eye following her first surgery in SCOTS2, she will return to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to undergo a second surgery consisting of extracting bone marrow from the back of the hip then injecting the collected stem cells directly into the eye area in hopes of continuing to regenerate the optic nerves.

Lexie was born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, a random birth defect characterized by underdevelopment of the optic nerves, the nerves responsible for transmission between the eye and the brain.

Lexie is a legally blind 38-year-old single mother of four boys. Unable to hold a driver’s license, she walks several miles per week, navigating as a pedestrian to transport herself. She struggles with everything from recognizing people to reading, and uses a magnifying glass to aid with documents and books. Playing cards and reading signage are especially difficult, as well as using computers, phones, TVs, and other devices.
