Teaching/Documenting in Cambodia

Hi everyone,

First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read about my story and what I hope to do with this campaign. My name is Thien Nguyen and I live in San Jose, CA. I've worked with kids and the community for the last 10 years at the YMCA and recently I am chasing my dream of becoming a photographer/videographer. 

Five years ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to be a volunteer teacher at a small school in a small village in Po Thum, Cambodia. The school is ran by Catholic Lasallian Brothers. Although it was hot and resources were bare minimum, my fondest memories are of the students, their willingness to learn  and their joy for life even when they didn't have much. Three years later, I returned and fell in love with Po Thum all over again.  Fast forward to next year (2017), my goal is to have another opportunity to return to Po Thum to be a volunteer teacher and to integrate my love for videography. I hope to put my skills to use and create a video documentary of the life of kids/students in Po Thum, Cambodia.

The school in Po Thum is located across the river from Cambodia's capital city of Phnom Penh. The school was started by Lasallian brothers and their goal is to serve the underpriviledge community in the small village. My goal is to document their amazing work and bring light to the kids and people of Po Thum.

Fundraising Goal:

My hope is to raise at least $2500.

$1250 - Airfare
$500 - Living expense
$750 or more for learning supplies for the kids.
Any amount surpassing $2500 will all go towards the kids in terms of gifts and supplies.

I hope to raise this amount by spring or summer of 2017 and the trip would be from 2-3 weeks.

This project means a lot to me because every time  I go to volunteer, I always stay longer than planned because the kids and the community there teaches me more than I can ever teach them.  They have left a big mark in my life and I try to go as often as possible because this experience will continue to open my eyes to the world. My goal is to raise awareness and some money for the kids and the school.
