Just days after his wedding last year, my father was diagnosed with stage four metastatic cancer. He has been living in Tonga, where he and his bride sell pizzas and soak up the sunshine.

Now, however, his condition has rapidly deteriorated. My dad is currently hospitalized on the “Big Island” in Tonga. About a week ago now, he was admitted to the hospital on his small island with suspected food poisoning. It was not food poisoning, actually. It was side effects of the cancer in his abdomen and lymph nodes. We now know this because he was not making sufficient platelets in his blood. Despite multiple blood transfusions from the TWO matching donors on the island, he was continuing to decline and was in increasing pain. He was transferred to the big island two days ago to get care from a senior doctor and to have access to a bigger blood donor pool. In addition, this island is the one with flights to Auckland. This is important because the plan was to put him on a commercial, business class flight where he could receive supplemental oxygen, have space to recline, and was not close to other passengers (he is immunocompromosed and clearly a big COVID risk). I was flying to LA to meet him there and accompany him home. Two nights ago, however, his condition worsened suddenly and has not improved. It may be a reaction to morphine- many people take about 48 hours to adjust to it and some people react more weirdly than others. It may be the blood transfusions he got that night. It may just be cancer? Currently, he is not able to move at all, he is basically sleeping and very disoriented. We have rescheduled his flights for next week, same time same place. However, it may be necessary to wait another week. If the doctors feel he will not be ready to fly that second week, or, if he becomes worse I will cancel his tickets and buy my own ticket to fly to him in Tonga. The BEST quote for air-ambulance service was $120,000. That price is out of our ability to fathom, let alone pay. Therefore, the best option is to hire a medical chaperone to fly with him that can provide care en route. This will cost in the neighborhood of $8000 in addition to the ticket we already purchased for my dad. Please consider donating even $20 if you can spare it. I know we are all struggling at this time!
