Let’s help our friend Abbie out!

Abbie was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in April of 2023. FND is described as a “software” rather than “hardware” neurological disorder, meaning there is nothing structurally wrong with Abbie’s brain, but her brain has difficulty correctly sending signals to the rest of the body. For Abbie, this presents as difficulty walking, tremors, coordination problems, and cognitive challenges. Abbie has spent the past 2 years working hard in various therapies and at home to regain her independence with the ultimate goal of walking down the aisle, which she did! She got back to working full-time and walking with just her forearm crutches.

In June of 2025, Abbie’s spinal cord stimulator broke; an implant that was managing her Complex Regional Pain Syndrome for over 10 years. CRPS is a neurologic pain disorder that causes severe pain, blood flow changes, and in Abbie’s case, severe dystonia, causing her foot to turn in. This recurrence of her CRPS symptoms has caused a significant FND relapse as well. Abbie is not currently able to work, drive, or walk.

Abbie and Stacey have looked across the country for treatment options that don’t involve long-term opioid use and chose to apply to Re+Active in El Segundo, California. Re+Active provides intensive outpatient neurorehabilitation services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychological services, as well as group movement and art classes. This program specializes in FND and also has a specialized CRPS pathway. Abbie has been accepted and is looking forward to regaining skills and getting back to everyday life. This program is not covered by insurance and is a significant financial burden on Abbie and Stacey.

We’ve had the privilege of knowing Abbie for over 10 years, and in that time, she has touched all of our lives in countless ways. Abbie is the kind of person who shows up for others through every high and every low with support and strength.

Now it’s our turn to show up for her. Abbie has an important opportunity to receive treatment in California, and she and Stacey need our help to get there. Abbie and Stacey will be moving to California for at least a month while Abbie receives treatment.
