Funding for Legal Justice

Dear friends and relatives,

My name is Emma Elliott. I am mama to two of the most sacred beings, C and S.

C, S, & I are enrolled members of the Cowichan Tribes from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the support you've extended to me and my family during the past few years. Your presence in our lives has meant the world to us.

As you may know, my family has been navigating a difficult divorce, which has been ongoing for 2 years and 5 months. The trial is finally approaching, and is firmly set for Monday, November 13th to Thursday, November 22nd.

This has been an extraordinarily complex and expensive case, with unique considerations related to our Cowichan heritage and rights. The cumulative financial cost incurred so far, amounting to approx. $600,000, underscores the complexity and uniqueness of this situation. With just around 4 weeks left until the trial, I'm facing increased financial strain. I have expert and legal costs related to trial (e.g., additional retainer fees), which I'm unable to cover at this moment. I currently need $5,000 to cover expert and legal costs as we near the trial date. Your financial contribution would help ensure that we have the best chance, despite an uphill battle in every direction. Your contribution would go directly to legal expenses and expert fees associated with the trial.

Nothing matters to me more than securing C and S's free access to our rich Cowichan culture, heritage, and family. We know through our experiences, and through the research that Indigenous children thrive within the context of their interdependent relationships. We know that their cultural heritage matters for their overall sense of identity, belonging, purpose, and possible futures.

Every contribution, regardless of amount, makes a significant difference. Many of you have already supported our family in this way, and your generosity is greatly appreciated. With your contribution, and by standing together, we can demonstrate the overwhelming importance of preserving their cultural heritage and our tribal sovereignty...even in a family court situation. This is critical, not only for C and S, but for Indigenous families who want the chance to be a part of their cultural communities.
