As you may already know my name is Ruby Montero and I am a 54 year old, mother, wife, and retired veteran of the US Army National Guard. What you may not know is that I have a dibilating illness called Scleroderma with Lung Fibrosis for the past 6 years. This illness is a connective tissue disorder which causes hardening of the skin and in my case scaring of the lungs, but can also affect other vital organs. As a result of this illness, I have a chronic cough, shortness of breath, acid reflux, and extreme fatigue, which requires me to be on high dose oxygen 24/7.
Upon initially being diagnosed with this illness, I was in denial. Until this point in my life, I was in overall good health, still working full-time as a Policy Procedures Specialist at Citibank, a full-time mother of 2 daughters, 2 dogs, and a cat, and still very active in life. I was told the life expectancy for this particular illness is 2-5 years. I was devastated, felt lost and alone, despite knowing I had the love and support of my family. However, I never once til this day said "why me," because if not me then who? I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
At this time life is good, I'm still breathing and able to care for myself. I am currently living in Houston, TX with my oldest daughter, while awaiting a double lung transplant. I have been listed for a lung transplant since September 14, 2015 at Methodist J.C. Walter Transplant Center in Houston. Although I am fortunate and blessed to have health insurance coverage, it is not nearly enough to cover the cost of my transplant. Which is why I need you!
Not only your prayers and emotional support, but your financial support as well. This would mean the world to me to get this transplant because I want to LIVE, in hopes of returning to work one day and possibly being a blessing to someone else who might be going through what I am going through or who may have a loved one going through a similar situation. It's hard, but I know I'll get through it because I have faith in God, love from family and friends, and you. This overall experience has taught me to cherish each day by enjoying life, family, and friends. So I thank you in advance for all your prayers and your support, may God bless you.
