From Overnight Shifts to Medical School: Help Me Continue!

Hello everyone,

My name is Mykia Lee, and I am currently a third-year medical student at Meharry Medical College, pursuing a lifelong dream of becoming a physician.

In September, I was unexpectedly informed that I would be unable to receive financial aid for the Fall 2025 semester. For most medical students, financial aid is the primary means of covering not only tuition, but also basic living expenses. After exhausting every available financial option, I was left with no choice but to take on a demanding job as a seasonal associate at an Amazon warehouse.

For months, I worked five nights a week, often 10–12 hour overnight shifts, while still attending classes during the day and studying for my board examinations. While this job has allowed me to stay afloat and pay personal bills, I am still facing an outstanding tuition balance of $33,497 owed to Meharry Medical College.

At this time, I have had to make the incredibly difficult decision to take a six-month leave of absence from medical school so that I can focus entirely on resolving this financial burden. Without paying this balance, I will not be permitted to return to the institution. I have arranged a payment plan requiring $5,583 per month, with the first payment due on January 5, 2026. Although I remain concerned about funding my fourth year of medical school, my immediate priority is overcoming this hurdle so I can continue moving forward.

My fundraising goal is $40,000. Of this amount, $33,497 will go directly toward my tuition balance, while the remaining $6,503 will help cover essential living expenses as I transition out of my seasonal Amazon position and continue preparing for my board exams. This support would significantly reduce financial strain and allow me to focus fully on my education and future patients.

My journey through medical school has not been linear, but it has been marked by resilience, perseverance, and growth. Every obstacle I’ve faced has strengthened my character and reaffirmed my purpose. These delays do not deny my calling—they refine it. With unwavering faith and determination, I am committed to becoming the first physician in my family.

If you are able to give, in any amount, I would be deeply grateful. Your support brings me one step closer to fulfilling my dream of serving others as Dr. Lee. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for believing in me.

With gratitude,
Mykia Lee
