Hi my name is Abi. As it is 80 years since the end of World War 2 I am raising money in memory of all those who were Prisoners of War in the Far East.

On 15th February 1942 around 50,000 British Troops were captured by the Imperial Japanese Army in Singapore.

Around 30,000 were sent to Thailand to build the Thai-Burma Railway also known as the Death Railway. Others were sent to work in mines or factories. Not to mention those who died on the Hell Ships.

Come VE Day on May 8th 1945, there were still many thousands of Allied Troops still held captive by the Japanese Imperial Army. Their war was still being fought.

Many were being tortured and being fed such a meagre ration that they were malnourished and very sick with tropical disease such as Malaria and Dysentery, not to mention the nutritional deficiencies that caused many deaths and life long issues.

Japan finally Surrendered on 15th August 1945 although many camps weren’t liberated until a few weeks later.

These men then had to be transported home. The first men, mostly very senior officers or very sick men arrived home at the end of September 1945. Most arrived home between October and December 1945.

My darling Grandfather was one of the lucky ones who survived. He suffered Beri Beri, Malaria, Dysentery, Trench Foot and he lost his eyesight.

My Grandfather worked on the Thai Burma Railway 3 years of his imprisonment. He arrived home on 30th September 1945.

I am incredibly proud to be the Grandchild of a FEPOW and they deserve to be remembered.
