Father of 4 suffers massive stroke

On the night of Feb 29, 2024, Nathan Staggs of Lewisburg, TN fell from the bed drooling and slurring. His wife of 8 years, Tierra Staggs, daughter of Toney and La'Trena Thomas, did not let him go to sleep as he wanted. She immediately called her father-in-law, Lester Staggs, and brother-in-law Matt Staggs to come help her determine what was going on with him. Upon arrival, they saw his drooping face on the left side and tested his functions. Nathan was unable to move the entire left side of his body. It then became obvious Nate was suffering a stroke at only 41 years old, with no family history. He was rushed by ambulance to a life flight for Saint Thomas West in Nashville. The family is grateful that 3 of the children were with relatives the night of the incident, but his 15 year old was home. Nathan is the son of Beth Staggs and Lester & Valarie Staggs.

Saint Thomas called Tierra who was on her way, and informed her that he was going into surgery. Nine clots were removed from his carotid artery, and blood flow restored to the brain. It was then discovered that Nathan's heart was functioning at only 25%. This was shocking for his family, as Nathan lives a clean and quiet lifestyle. His doctors were in disbelief when he stood on his feet only 2 days after his stroke, proving that he would not have to re-learn how to walk and talk again. However, his blood pressure and heart rate were going off the charts when he moved. He could not begin blood thinners for risk of brain bleeding.

The following week of testing would prove there are more questions than answers. Clots were not found behind his heart, but more clots are in his kidneys and spleen. He also has an enlarged heart. His neurology and cardio teams decided the risk was greater to not begin a blood thinner, as clots were now present in his arms. Nathan has been in extreme pain, but has kept a grateful heart. His family is thankful for the many prayer lists he is on. They are assured that God has His hand on Nathan's recovery.

It is uncertain what his recovery will look like, or when he can return to work as a freight broker in Franklin, TN. Unfortunately, Nathan does not have short term disability or insurance. His wife is understandably out of work and by his side at the hospital. The doctors are still trying to figure out what is happening to Nathan. The family would greatly appreciate any generosity and prayers while they continue the fight for Nathan's life at Saint Thomas Hospital.
