Erin’s Artist Residency in Sicily

Donation protected
Most of you finding out about this know me, but for those of you who don’t, my name is Erin Morrison and I’m an artist currently living in Tacoma, Washington.

This October I received the wonderful opportunity to attend a 3-week Residency Program at Officina Stamperia del Notaio in Tusa, Sicily. I’m asking for your assistance to help fund this program and expenses for travel.

Very few residency programs permit artists to bring their children, and for nearly 7 years after the birth of our first son, I stopped applying for this reason. I was so thankful to find that this program can accommodate dependents and am considering bringing my second child (18mo). Typically residencies range from 2 weeks to 3 months, they are generally shorter for artists with children.

Recently I relocated to the Pacific Northwest after living 3 years in Hong Kong. Due to the strict quarantine measures, I had not been able to travel, even regionally. This will be a wonderful opportunity for me to experience a part of the world that has been of interest, particularly to my sculpture practice. I will have access to the printmaking facilities on site and the multiple large studios and expect to travel around the region while there.

If you are unfamiliar with what an Artist Residency program is and how beneficial they are, there is a great article by Daniel Gerwin for Hyperallergic that explains this, and why it is so difficult for those that are parents to attend them.

Daniel also wrote an op-ed in 2021 about the reality of working in the art world as a parent, featuring me with my first child: The Myth About Having Children as an Artist

I have just finished a 3-month Residency at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma Washington. I have loved the opportunity to work with students while making my work, and having my baby with me.
Between now and October I plan to relocate years of work that has been in LA storage since 2019 while building out my new home and studio in Basalt, Colorado.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Erin Morrison (b. 1985, Little Rock, AR) studied painting and sculpture at Memphis College of Art and UCLA, where she received her MFA in 2014. Her work is informed by issues of Social Justice, Reproductive Rights, and the implications of the expansion of Western Colonialism on global relations. Often spanning the languages of abstraction and representationalism, she embraces analog methods of production including gypsum cast bas-relief, printmaking and ceramics as a means of bringing in the viewer to have a physical dialog with the intricacies of her work.
