Anyone who knows our parents knows the fun, caring, hardworking and loving people they are. They are thoughtful, dedicated and always putting their family first. For the last three years, our dad has undergone a slew of health problems and our mom has been handling everything on her own. We have seen the toll it has taken on our parents and now it is our turn to help them.
Last July our dad suffered a heart attack. We were lucky enough that he got to the hospital in time, but the lasting complications have put him in and out of the hospital for the past year and a half, and he is on steady oxygen. On Christmas Day 2018, he was rushed to the hospital and we nearly lost him.
Unfortunately, the heart attack put an enormous amount of stress on his body and his existing COPD. Our dad currently needs a double lung transplant in order to survive. After months of tests, back and forth to the city and hundreds of doctors appointments, he was finally put on the transplant list. While this was great news and we were anxiously waiting for the call for new lungs, devastation hit once again — and he was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Unfortunately, this means he has been immediately removed from the transplant list. He is currently undergoing treatment. He is receiving radiation and chemotherapy for the next three months, as he fights this new battle.
While insurance covers parts of this treatment, the financial burden of medical bills, medication and medical equipment is something our mom is struggling to keep up with. With the enormous stress of tending to our father, she has the added responsibility of taking care of and doing everything in and out of the house while working a full time job.
Our dad was laid off from his job this spring leaving our mom, a Civilian for the Nassau County Police Department with just one source of income. Due to his illness he was not able to file for unemployment and NYS disability, and has been denied SSI. He has filed for SSD but it has not received any income as of yet.
We are asking for any help and support so our dad can beat this cancer and get back on the list for a transplant that he is in desperate need of.
From our family to yours, we appreciate any help that comes our way in support of the long journey ahead for all of us ❤
