Dr Lisa Barry Helped Her Students; Let's Help Her

Donation protected
Dr. Barry always helped her students.  She gave her time freely.  Her office was a safe place for all of us, especially her minority and LGBTQ+ students.  She welcomed all students whether they shared her politics or not and she was always willing to listen to alternate points of view.  For some of us, she was a surrogate mom while we were on campus.

Many of us lived through her traumas, tragedies, and hardships.   A month before the Covid pandemic hit, her mom was hospitalized.  We all knew her mom was deteriorating because she let us know on the first day of the semester.  When her mom was discharged from the hospital, she was put in home hospice and Dr. Barry was her caretaker because she couldn't afford to hire anybody to help her.  The pandemic allowed her to keep teaching even though she had to stay at home with her mom 24/7.

Dr. Barry's mom died in June 2020.  Dr. Barry lost both of her teaching positions in August 2020 and she has been unemployed ever since.  She cashed out her pension to help her survive financially but it only covered her until November.  She receives the maximum unemployment benefit but it doesn't even come close to covering her rent or her other expenses.  And because she gets the maximum unemployment payment, she only gets $16/mo in food stamps.

She is behind in her rent, her car payments, and her credit card payments.  She owes a huge tax payment because she cashed out her pension.  She had to pay for her mom's cremation and all of that.  And she's still trying to pay off her mom's bills.

And she desperately wants to move back to New York so she can be with her husband and step-daughter but she has no way to pay for that.  She has applied for hundreds of jobs but has gotten nothing.  She has shared some of her story on Instagram.  She's really hurting.

She needs our help.

Dr. Barry always bent over backward to help her students.  She didn't want us to set up a GoFundMe when we offered because she said it felt selfish to ask for help.  She's never been good at asking for help (she talked about that in class one day).  But it's our turn to help her.

The amount we're raising would help her catch up on her rent, her car payments (so it doesn't get repossessed), and her credit card payments, pay off her mom's bills, pay her tax bill, and move back to New York with enough money to pay for first, last, security deposit, and a month or two of rent until she can get back on her feet financially.

Come on, everybody!  Let's do this!
