A tremendous opportunity has presented itself. My heart is bursting with joy. I applied and have been accepted to volunteer as a doula in rural Tanzania to support birthing women in 2 local clinics over 11 days. What is a doula you ask? A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Countless scientific trials examining doula care demonstrate remarkably improved physical and psychological outcomes for both mother and baby. Doulas have a positive impact on the wellbeing of the entire family.
I along with other doulas will be partnering with a non-profit organization that builds and provides water purification buckets for the local communities to help provide clean water to wash the mothers and babies in. We will be providing these buckets throughout the clinics and hopefully sending mothers home with them.
Lastly as much as we would like to take everything we possibly can with us to help with birthing women such as soap, sanitary pads and baby slings we instead have decided to support their local economy and purchase the materials there so that they are sustainably procured.
