Donna Becomes a Paramedic

Doação protegida
My name is Donna and I am raising money in order to complete my education to become a Paramedic.

A little background:

I graduated from high school in 2011 and was off to college to study Interpreting for the Deaf. I worked hard and received academic honors, but after about a year in the program I realized that I did not want to spend my whole life as a Sign Language Interpreter. So, I finished out my second year and earned an Associate’s Degree in Deaf Studies. After that my husband and I moved to be closer to his job and I enrolled in a program to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). My ultimate plan was to work in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) while I went through nursing school. This plan quickly changed.

During EMT school I realized that my passions were in EMS, not nursing. I studied daily, and worked hard to keep my grades high and learn as much as possible. I understood that the things I was learning in class could be used to save someone’s life; I took that very seriously.

After the class ended, I took my licensing test and passed. I immediately started working as an EMT and fell in love with the work. The more time I spent on an ambulance the more I discovered a sense of purpose and satisfaction in my career. I was in awe that I had the opportunity to step into the worst moment of a person’s life and provide them with a bit of hope. I was honored every time I got a chance to look into the lives of individuals I had never met and take a few steps alongside them. The time and effort I put into school had paid off, and the knowledge that I had gained was making a tangible difference in the lives of the people around me.

After discovering how much this career meant to me, I decided I couldn't stop my education. My next option at higher EMS education was to become a Paramedic. As a Paramedic, I would have more skills to help both my patient and my community. Along with that, there are more full-time job opportunities in a wider array of areas that offer better pay and benefits. I had planned on starting those classes about 6 months after my licensing.

Unfortunately, a few months before classes began, my marriage ended. I was forced to move back in with my parents in another state and try and rebuild. Through the help of friends and family, I have recovered from that pain, and am now looking forward to getting married again this November. Along with that, I have decided that now is the time to attend Paramedic training. My income right now isn’t high, although I make it work. The catch is, I cannot make more money until I am a Paramedic, but I can’t really afford classes on the income I currently have. This is been a dream of mine for awhile and I look forward to making it happen. I appreciate any help given towards my goal, big or small.
