- ROCKET KID- Intrepid Space Explorer/ Kid Genius traveling thru dystopian worlds doing battle with monsters, Aliens and even himself. Every kid is a rocket kid. This kid just has the right combination of naivety and boldness to face it head on.
ROCKET KID INTRO-
In "The Adventures of Rocket Kid," we meet our young protagonist, a brilliant boy whose life takes an unexpected detour into a perplexing and convoluted world tailor-made just for him.
The air crackles with mystery as he navigates a landscape populated by clones and characters, each bearing a striking resemblance to him — varying in heights, weights, ages, genders, and even species. Amid this kaleidoscope of identities, the one constant is our hero's signature pink mohawk and combat boots, a visual beacon in the bewildering sea of doppelgängers.
Thrusted into this enigmatic universe, Rocket Kid finds himself entangled in a never-ending battle against a menagerie of adversaries — from mischievous alien frogs to colossal monsters that defy imagination. Yet, his most formidable opponent may be his own shadow self, an ominous presence that follows him with an unsettling intensity.
As the young genius embarks on his journey, the lines between friend and foe blur, and the narrative unfolds with a sense of ambiguity. The endgame is uncertain, and the means are as convoluted as the world he now calls home. Will Rocket Kid discover the key to escape this puzzling dimension, or is he destined to ascend as the reluctant king of Rocketville? In a realm where logic twists like a kaleidoscope and reality dances on the edge of imagination.
"The Adventures of Rocket Kid" promises an exhilarating odyssey through a landscape where the unexpected is the only constant. Get ready to dive headfirst into a cosmic adventure where every twist and turn reveals a new layer of intrigue, and the fate of Rocket Kid remains tantalizingly uncertain.
Growing up I was obsessed with comic books. Jumping on my bike and riding with my friends to Continental Comics in Queens was like a pilgrimage. Picking up the latest issue of Spiderman when Todd Mcfarlane took over drawing was like having your mind blown again and again with every issue. As far as we were concerned Todd Mcfarlane's Spiderman and Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes were some of the best art & storytelling you could get. And it only got better from there! We got to witness the orgin of VENOM, Deadpool and then Spawn, Pitt, The Maxx and The Savage Dragon via IMAGE comics, from that new generation of artists. These were the happiest times of my childhood, spent dreaming up new characters, being entrenched in storylines and jumping on our bikes to visit every comic store we could find. This is at the heart of what Rocket Kid is about. That carefree curiosity and ecstatic interest in adventuring.
If you were a fan of Calvin & Hobbes's Spaceman Spiff or love timeless tales like Alice in Wonderland, Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story, Wizard of Oz and comic books with the darkness of Bane or Venom then this will be right up your alley. Lots of nods to the greats and cameos by characters that inspired us all.
Although most of the characters are fictional, many created over 20yrs ago!- many of the cameo characters in the comic are also loosely based on some real people in my life, childhood friends and family from JC and Paterson NJ.
*The message of Rocket Kid is about thriving in chaos, indulging in adventure & imagination and most of all -creating at all costs. You travel along with RK as they travel thru multiple dimensions, shadow worlds, dream worlds, the future, past and even amongst the Gods themselves. The line between what is real and not real becomes blurred after a passage thru an enigmatic electric field that alters his reality to the point where the intangible becomes tangible, strange becomes the norm and despite everything being connected, nothing is ever what it seems. Rocket stumbles on an old shack that is pristine inside like its never been lived in. The interior is all black and grey and the only furniture is a leather chesterfield wing backed armchair and an ornately framed mirror that sits directly across from it. After staring at it for what seems like an eternity Rocket's reflection becomes more of a shadow and that shadow awakens. Believing it to me malevolent Rocket takes off out of there remembering that curfew is coming, unaware that the shadow kid is following close behind. This my version of "the multiverse" popular in Marvel Comics timelines. I call it "The Mirrorverse" this is what governs the rules of Rocketville.
SHADOW KIDD is all things dark. He is the "shadow self" the "mirror", fears manifested in the flesh, he is selfish opportunism, delightful scorn, toxic attachment and profound lonliness rolled into one. He wants what Rocket has and is fully invested in getting as close as he can to that at all costs, with any means necessary. Its not even that he sees Rocket as an enemy or a prey, hes just so fully transfixed that he cannot help himself and the more Rocket Kid fears, ignores or pushes him away the more fixated he becomes. Its unclear at first at just how powerful this shadow can become but if you imagine how much darkness there is deep in the ocean or out in space....thats also where he can draw power from!
This will be my debut comic written and created by me John Fathom an artist, sculptor, curator, character designer, installation artist of immersive arts spaces and all around struggling artist and arts lover.. I founded a 4 story arts co'op in Jersey City named 660studios that I managed for 20yrs, where I've met so many weird and wonderful characters. I now co-direct another 4 story arts co'op in Paterson NJ called Prototype237, so its safe to say that after over 25yrs, living in freezing cold, bizarre and constantly changing worlds surrounded by weirdos- that this (for better or worse) has become my natural habitat. To give you an idea of how dedicated I am to making this dream a reality Ive actually sold off about 2/3 of my comic collection so that I can take some time off to write and pay my bills and invest in this vision. I dont regret it and refuse to look back. They inspired me and I sold to collectors that love them just as much as I did, but now those comics are gone and I need another boost to get the comic up this next hurdle.
I conceived lots of the characters many years ago, but with the help of AI I was able to finally storyboard and illustrate so many of the scenes at the speed at which I write. A dream of mine for at least 25yrs.
The money generated by this gofundme will help cover the costs for me to continue writing, maintain, produce, advertise, and design the comic, as well as produce some simple merchandise and promotional material. The comic will be available on WEBTOONS and other platforms like GLOBALCOMIX.
There will be a 2nd tier coming out afterwards that hopefully based on the success of this outreach will help to make some 3d printed vinyl toys and further develop the story line into a more polished graphic novel.
This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. After doing whatever it takes to remain working in the arts for the last 20+yrs, I feel like maybe I've actually lived a full enough life to tell a good story from the eyes of child.

There's also a PATREON which will be officially launched once the graphic novel is complete. - https://patreon.com/IAMROCKETKID?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link
*There's also currently an art show at Grassroots Community Space in Jersey City and a pop up shop called ATMOSPHERE that is connected to this storyline, that I collaborated on with Dahlia Reigns. I hope you'll check us out and support however you can!
