Dixie Fire Devastates Greenville Native Community
Roundhouse Council is an Indian Education and Family Resource Center. We have served the Plumas County Area for over 30 years. Our Focus is Education, Culture, Family and Wellness! Our Main activity is our afterschool tutoring program where we had 31 students attending. Staff has taken kids to Traditional Dances, Handgame Tournaments, Native Basketball Tournaments, wellness retreats and Education conferences. Before Covid-19 we had Family Night dinners twice a month and Elders Lunch once a Month where staff would cook for the families and the Elders and we would play games do arts and crafts or just watch movies together. Roundhouse also held a yearly youth TEK culture camp. We had kids come from all over Northern California to participate. Roundhouse also has a Family Advocate who focused on First 5 helping kids in the 0-5 age group helping families get medi-cal and working with the children and parents on the growth of the child.
The Dixie fire is the largest wildlife in California this year. It engulfed the small mountain town Greenville in August, destroying the Roadhouse building, along with historical buildings, businesses, schools, and homes. Roadhouse is a wonderful program that provided a safe space, especially for native children. All donations will go to the Roadhouse Council to help out with damages caused by Dixie.
Greenville Roundhouse is working with Humboldt State's University's Indian Natural Resource Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP), as well as the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) chapter in order to raise funds.
