D&D games for underprivileged kids

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Emily and I'm a 22 year old from Calgary, Alberta. I currently work online as a Dungeons and Dragons DM and have for a few years. I have a dream to run free sessions in person for struggling kids, whether they are escaping abusive situations or living with a disability. Recently I've began sending out emails to different shelters within my city proposing my idea to them. However, D&D is quite expensive, and I can't afford to buy everything required for both the kids and I to hold sessions. I decided to create a Go Fund Me to help raise money for the necessities, and hopefully some additional fun things as well, such as snacks and drinks during sessions.

When I was a kid, I was stuck in a domestic abuse situation for many years. I'm the oldest of 6 children by quite a bit and wasn't able to recieve the help I needed back then. As an adult, I learned about D&D and very quickly became absolutely fascinated with the game. I realized that it gave me a healthy escape from all the stress and trauma that I was enduring every day. I would love to be able to give kids like me this opportunity, a chance to take their mind off of their real world struggles and immerse themselves in a fantasy game where they can be anyone they want. I aim to teach kids how to play the game and take them through introductory campaigns or one shots. The goal I've set right now will cover many things, which I'll list below, and eventually I hope to take on even more sessions with different groups of kids which will require additional books and supplies. All prices listed are in Canadian dollars.

  • 5e Player's Handbooks x4 - $39.99 each on the Chapters website
  • 6 sets of dice with a bag for each x3 - $20.99 on Amazon (player's will keep these)
  • 5e character sheets - $12.09 on Amazon
  • DM starter set - $150.83 on Amazon
  • Candlekeep Mysteries - $49.16 on Amazon
  • Spelljammer: Adventures in Space - $72.51 on Amazon
  • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - $51.53 on Amazon
  • Small 3D printer for dungeon assets and minifigures - $339.00 on Amazon

Buying a 3D printer will overall be much cheaper than purchasing dungeon assets and minifigures individually. This will allow me to print anything I need, saving likely thousands of dollars. I will also need to purchase other smaller things, such as pencils, pens, paper, erasers, travelling cost, etc. Eventually I would love to be able to give out Player's Handbooks and character sheets to the players, but they are expensive, so for now the books will be on a loan basis. Dice can be bought for a reasonable price so I aim to give every child a set of dice that they can keep.

While I currently work in the Dungeons and Dragons field, I unfortunately mostly own books and supplies online through Roll20, which won't be possible to use for in-person sessions. Currently I have two physical books, but they are for quite experienced players (Odyssey of the Dragonlords, Out of the Abyss).

Donations of books, sheets, assets, minifigures, dice, etc. are always welcome and accepted. If you're interested in donating anything, please contact me. I eventually would love to be partnered with a company that sells these products.

Thank you so much for your consideration, and even if you can't assist financially, sharing the link will absolutely help too!
