Hi my name is Darren,
I’m looking to try raise funds to further our reef conservation efforts at Togat Nusa in Mentawai islands, Sumatra, Indonesia.
not only do we need physical help. But we need so many supplies and equipment to really make a difference. So far it’s just been the owner John and myself working on the reefs. ( more John as I’m stuck in my daily job in Australia growing corals inland in a Warehouse. )
We need to buy rebar, welding rods, cement, two part putty . Resin . Get rocks delivered to the site. Build molds to create reef frames . Testing equipment for water quality and monitoring. To share globally. Fuel for boats to cart rocks and get to locations for reef building or monitoring, pay locals a wage to help us. Because it’s so remote it’s very hard to get anything to the island.
We would love a compressor and diving equipment but snorkeling is doable. And we are fine just using that . I might try buy a small personal tank that last 10 minutes just for some jobs. The ones you can hand pump.
One the most important things we need to do, Is a large educational run in all the local villages and try teach the children the importance of coral reefs. And why we need protected zones that are not fished or touched. Explaining how they produce food for surrounding reefs they can fish. And also explain the impacts of some practices done by locals ie garbage being put at the water’s edge at low tide and it’s magically gone at high tide. And dad’s outboard motor can’t get thrown onto reef right in front of the village when no longer working. Don’t judge - they do not have any garbage removal trucks coming weekly in these parts. Or ever. And 1st world brings all this plastic garbage to places with no means to recycle (yet, hopefully.)
it’s either burn garbage or put it on the edge of the water. Both giving horrible results.
Ideally we need help to continue educating the importance of not only reefs but ocean facing land being protected and completely cleared, prevent erosion or manage it well to prevent run off of sediment into reefs and reduce human waste in coaster reefs. Then grow new reefs in areas that have been worst affected by both humans and bleaching last year 2025 from warmer than normal waters.
This region has some stunning diverse marine life and needs protection and help. If we don’t act now it could be too late and I want to dedicate my life to coral reefs. My true passion. I hope my kids kids can get to see and be amazed by the ocean like I have.
We have got a website
www.reefconservation.earth
i will add full disclosure of everything purchased or spent on the project so no donations will be used outside of this project. Eventually we are going to try become a non profit organisation, hopefully getting funding from various organisations to really expand the operations into more areas. But that seems like it’s a little bit away. Not something I can do alone. I do have two friends that are keen on being involved . More will be revealed once confirmed.
I buy all my own flights , I pay all my own expenses , buy all the equipment I need like underwater drills and I work for nothing. And don’t want to be paid, I’m doing this because it’s something I started in 2022 and now it’s all I want to do. So many amazing people already do this al over the world. We were the first to do it in this area. Now there is at least one other similar thing started. And I’m constantly being asked to help in other areas but I’m only one person and I work in my own business,
Our Socsl media content is hopefully going to excite people, the aim will be to get people inspired so more people want to do this everywhere.
Everything we do and learn we will be putting into our socials and website and sharing with similar groups. Hopefully sharing vital information that can improve everyone’s success. Resilient fast growing corals provide the best reef building. Offering places for reef fish to get refuge from predators and thereby creating thriving ecosystems and more life comes. Fish and coral make reefs thrive. Thriving reefs create healthy ecosystems.
the Gofunfme will be used to get us off the ground and actually get some large things done. This will then allow us to showcase the work done to hopefully get much larger funding to really make a serious impact and get as many locals involved. In various projects. Education and helping local economies by hiring locals being vital to the success.
Please follow all our socials. All are linked in our website. We’re only small now. But from small coral frags large reefs can grow. Thanks for reading .
if you can’t donate just following and liking our posts help share our message.
Have a Wonderful Day
