Conservation Efforts at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society is a registered charity and non-profit organization working to protect 325 acres of ecologically significant land along the Vedder River, just west of Chilliwack, British Columbia. This rare natural area includes one of the last remaining undyked wetlands in the region; a vital and vanishing habitat.

Our conservation efforts focus on safeguarding this unique landscape, which provides essential refuge for the Pacific Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias fannini) and numerous other species at risk. Wetlands, forests, and riparian zones support incredible biodiversity, but they are under increasing pressure from development, climate change, and human disturbance.

Conservation staff at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve play a vital role in protecting the area's natural ecosystems and supporting local wildlife. Their work includes:

  • Habitat Protection and Restoration: They maintain wetlands, forests, and waterways to ensure healthy environments for birds, amphibians, fish, and plants.

  • Monitoring Wildlife: Staff regularly monitor the many different species that call the GBHNR home. This includes tracking species populations, diversity and behaviours; paying special attention to threatened species and species at risk.

  • Public Outreach: They lead nature walks and organize events that offer unique learning opportunities to the community. They also educate visitors about local ecology and conservation efforts.

  • Volunteer Coordination: They work with volunteers on activities like invasive species removal, native planting, and species monitoring.

Their combined efforts help preserve biodiversity and foster a deeper public appreciation for the natural world. We have never done a GoFundMe before as we have, historically, managed to cover conservation work costs with grants and other streams of revenue like our gift shop. This year, we are dealing with not receiving summer funding for the first time in 15 years and it strongly impacts what we are able to do in terms of time sensitive summer work. For reference, we received almost $22,000 last year and every penny went toward supporting two biological technican and two environmental education positions for the summer. We are also dealing with our main bridge being closed down due to structural damage which has certainly decreased the number of visitors we are having to our site, negatively impacting gift shop and program revenue. This year we DID receive a Pacific Salmon Foundation grant to help with refreshing our salmon channel that runs near our Interpretive Centre AND we are hoping to be able to augment that project with Reed Canary Grass removal while we have equipment on site. I know how important this place is to the Chilliwack Community and beyond, and your donation directly supports on-the-ground conservation efforts to ensure these rare ecosystems, and the species that depend on them, are not lost.

And for those who don't feel comfortable contributing here, donations can still be made at our interpretive centre at 5200 Sumas Prairie Road, over the phone via credit card, via eTransfer to [e-mail editado], through our website at chilliwackblueheron.com, or by donating bottles at any bottle depot that has express deposit, using our phone number; [telefone editado]. The GBHNRS is a CRA registered charity so you will receive a tax receipt for any donation made. Please contact Camille if you have any questions about how else you may be able to support the heron reserve.

Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you for standing with us!
