Colton Farmer's Transplant Team
Donation protected
Colton became ill with flu-like symptoms on Tuesday September 17, 2013. He was only three years old, just shy of his fourth birthday. He was hospitalized at CGH Medical Center in Stering, IL, as his symptoms quickly worsened. His blood tests came back positive for Shiga Toxin Producing E Coli (STEC), a potentially life threatening bacteria. Later that week, his labs came back with dangerous levels of Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatine, which told the doctors that his kidneys were shutting down. The bacteria had begun to release toxins into his body that were attacking his organs.
Colton was immediately transferred to St. Francis Children's Hospital in Peoria, IL. Shortly after, he was additionally diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure. After 13 weeks in intensive care, and several surgeries, Colton was strong enough to be moved to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) to work with their incredible team of physical and occupational therapists for several weeks before finally returning home.
Since then, Colton has been in and out of the hospital several times battling complications from loss of kidney function.
Through this process, Colton's strength and resilience inspired many, either through witnessing it directly, or following the frequent blog updates posted by his parents. Unfortunately, his little kidneys have taken an insurmountable toll. Currently, Colton is on daily home-dialysis treatments as he awaits a kidney transplant early this summer once a donor kidney has been located.
While it has been a long journey, we consider ourselves blessed to have the support and prayers that have carried us through. If any of you have ever had the opportunity to meet Colton, you know the spunk he has despite all the medical treatments he faces on a daily basis.
This fund is to help assist the Egan family with transplant costs including: travel to and from Iowa City, lodging, food, insurance costs, and other medical expenses including Colton's immuno-suppressant medication. If you would like to contribute, please use this page as a convenient way to show your support and assist this family with their ever growing expenses. Thank you in advance for all your thoughts, prayers and donations.
