Chochenyo Temporary Art Program

Donation protected
In July 2020, the Alameda City Council de-named the park formerly known as Jackson Park and began a community-led renaming process.

While this process was underway, the City of Alameda partnered with Rhythmix Cultural Works to present a temporary art exhibition where the Jackson Park sign had previously stood. Curated by artist Stephen Bruce, the installation featured artwork by six artists that reflected on the theme of Creating Our Future.

The temporary exhibit was removed at the end of April 2021 when the City unveiled a new sign announcing the newly named Chochenyo Park (named for the language spoken by the Indigenous tribes in the area).

This GoFundMe is to raise funds to acquire the artwork to donate it permanently to the City of Alameda. Donating to this campaign will help commemorate the renaming process—the effort to look at Alameda’s history and the impacts of place-names on different parts of our community, and to realign how we present this space to reflect our community’s aspirations.

It will also support the artists who graciously gave their time, talent, and efforts to engage with our community as part of this project. All six artists were reimbursed for materials plus a modest honorarium for their contribution to the original installation; this is an opportunity to compensate them for their time and talent by collectively purchasing the artwork they created.

If we raise $6,000, we'll be able to purchase all six artworks to donate to the City. Rhythmix will use any additional funds to host a free workshop on social justice and anti-racism.

With your help, we can thank these talented artists, hold on to these beautiful artworks, and save a piece of our community’s recent efforts in confronting, considering, and beginning to address our city’s history with regards to indigenous and communities of color during a tumultuous time in our city, region, country, and world.

You can learn more about the artists, the exhibition, and the program at the Rhythmix Creating our Future webpage.
