Chef Q feeds Evanston families in need

"Before the pandemic, Q. Ibraheem ran a high-end catering business and on weekends taught local youth how to work in a commercial kitchen.
But after the first week of the state-stay-at-home order concluded, Ibraheem said she started getting messages from Evanston parents.
Was she cooking? Could she spare an extra plate of food?
Now, she’s delivering meals to 34 families, or more than 100 people, to help them get through the coronavirus pandemic. She makes and packs them alone, as her mother lives with her and she doesn’t want to risk her mom’s health.
An out-of-work school bus driver then picks up the meals and delivers them around Evanston.
Chef Q used her own money to buy ingredients for nutritious comfort food, and make enough so families could eat it for two nights. Recent meals have included brisket, collard greens and corn pudding. She also includes kiddie bags with every delivery, filled with fruit cups, granola bars and juice boxes.
“It’s hard to see, to be a parent and not be able to put food on the table, it’s gotta be horrible,” Ibraheem said. “I feel like I cannot turn people away.”
Ibraheem said she’s especially worried about kids who live with their grandparents, who might not be leaving the house for errands because of the increased threat of COVID-19 to older people.
She’s also coordinating with smaller local restaurants to help them donate produce or create meals for others who need them. Ibraheem is seeking donations of both food and money to help continue her deliveries.
“We’ll feed people until there is nothing left,” she said. “Families need to eat.”
